Blizzard announces that all Warcraft forum posts will display your real-life first and last name.

Um, how about NO? I only read the forums and very rarely post there, but this guarantees I will NEVER post there now. Sure, my name is already out there on the internet, but the whole point of Warcraft for me is to get to *play a game*, which translates to "escape my humdrum existence for a couple of hours a week". Aside from playing with some real-life friends and family, everyone else I've met in Warcraft (in my guilds, etc.) doesn't know my real name. Or if I'm really female. Or what I do for a living or what my other hobbies are. It's not relevant to the game. And I'd like to keep it that way.

But wait! There's MORE!

If you use certain add-ons in game, your RealID personal information is available to other players *whether you have accepted friends requests from them or not*. Also, I am getting conflicting reports on whether friends of friends can see your real name/information! That's charming! And so incredibly invasive!

Fortunately, there's a way to opt out. It's not the best way, as it means you have to set your account up as a child's account, but hell, I'll take it. It's illegal for a company to give out a child's personal information without a parent's permission, and as I've now set up my account where I'm my own parent, I don't authorize that.

It's an imperfect solution, but I'm sincerely hoping that Blizzard/Activision will see that a huge number of their players are NOT COOL with the RealID changes (at last count this morning, the thread on the WoW forums about the forum change had over 1800 pages, and hundreds of people were cancelling their accounts because of it). My hope is they will decide it's unethical and possibly dangerous to share people's information so freely and without express permission. I know WoW is a game that has almost as many female players as male players- speaking as a woman, I do not feel safe with the idea of total strangers being able to get my real name in the game. It sets up an unsafe environment for female players, who could end up stalked, harassed or threatened in real life. That's REALLY bad news.

I also wonder about the celebrities who are rumored to play the game. Many celebs play WoW for the anonymity it brings, forcing this RealID thing through means they will lose that.

It's a mess, certainly, but I am waiting to see how the chips fall. I will be very sad if the game becomes too risky for me to play anymore, since I really love it. But I'm not going to put myself in harm's way just to play my little orc and collect pets.

Lady GaGa's "Bad Romance" set to some drama-tastic elves from Warcraft. Really well made! But possible not safe for work, due to "mature situations".

Also, BIGBANG and 2NE1's "Lollipop", again with elves. Blood elves, but still elves. (Warning: the song is an insanely catchy K-Pop song that will take over your brain. I am addicted to this song. It's sad.)

I thought [livejournal.com profile] smudge_dragon in particular would like all the elves. ^_^

First off, I have new eBay auctions up today! There are also a bunch ending tomorrow/Weds.-ish, so please go have a look! We're still getting rid of a ton of comics, graphic novels, manga, art books, toys and video games that we either have doubles of or simply do not have the room for. Bonus, every little bit we get goes towards tax time, which is fast approaching!

I was a bit ill over the weekend, sick enough that I had to stay home from work on Saturday. This is unusual, because I usually try to just power through any illness I get. But, this bug I had made me dizzy every time I tried to stand up on Saturday morning and my fever was fairly high. So I spent most of the day asleep, and slept most of Sunday too. I'm doing better now, just some residual snot and one ear that needs to pop or something.

Paid bills today, which is always my favorite task. Then, worked on auction stuff (obviously) and mail order stuff. Day job wise, we are getting new flooring at the comic shop this weekend. (Desperately needed new flooring, I might add, the carpet in the shop is pretty godawful and well over fifteen years old.) This means my work schedule for the week is all wonky and strange, since us employees are going to be tasked with the moving of all the fixtures/stock to accommodate the guys who will be installing the new (non-carpet) flooring. And then next weekend is Furry Fiesta up in Dallas!

I finally saw the Twilight movie, because [livejournal.com profile] suarez and I watched the Rifftrax version. Even then, it was painful and terrible, and the film was so stupid, my brain reacted by forcing me to fall asleep multiple times during the movie, I guess in order to save itself. It really is a piece of craptastic Mary-Sue type self-insert fiction. Awful, awful, awful.

It's Valentine's time in the World of Warcraft, so I am excitedly doing the holiday themed quests before bed every night. Those are my favorite quests of all!

Got a lot done today... work, errands, and some household stuff. The cats are all groomed for the week. Indy loves the grooming, including the Allerpet-C bath. Batty likes the brushing and doesn't mind the bath part. Bandito dislikes the bath part, but enjoys the brushing and being combed. We have been slowly integrating them with each other, with supervised visits. So far, no one has attacked anyone else, there's been some hiding and the occasional hiss. Mostly, there's a lot of nose-sniffing, meeps of annoyance or nervousness, and then a lot of pointed ignoring of the other cat(s) in the room. The possibility that they could all get along is something I hope for, though I'm willing to accept it if they don't all get along. They're already all doing better than they did at the apartment.

Anyway, I mentioned auctions, because I have new auctions up! Please buy my stuff! We are also working on clearing out things we have duplicates on, so there's some nice stuff up. And I'm also auctioning a couple of fairly hard to find PlayStation 1 video games for [livejournal.com profile] willworks. Check them out! More to come later in the week.
New eBay auctions are here!

Now, time to rest up for work tomorrow. Should be a busy week this week. There's so much to do! I lost a day of time (Sunday) to a sinus migraine, so I feel like I am falling behind.

Oh, and if you hadn't heard yet, Yoshito Usui, the creator/artist of the manga Crayon Shin-Chan was found dead in the mountains where he'd been hiking. I always liked his comics, so this news makes me sad.

This reminds me, I have to get things ready for the [livejournal.com profile] saasclub meeting on the 27th. Fourteenth anniversary of the club. Good lord!

EDIT: And yay, I was even able to log in to WoW a little tonight on my main. I now have 81 mini-pets, having just gotten the Pint-Sized Pink Pachyderm from the Brewfest holiday. I'm so glad my main is fixed- I was having an issue when I logged her out in Dalaran where she'd get "stuck". I'd log in, and be unable to move, and then get disconnected from the server. Very frustrating. I can now apparently move when in Dalaran, which is a good thing as I'm only four levels away from 80 and want to get there soon. I realize this paragraph makes no sense if you don't play World of Warcraft. ^_^;

Last week I was in a deep funk, due to stress and sadness over the loss of someone I considered an old friend. This week, the stress remains, as tax time looms on the horizon, and I must get all the information ready for the accountant. Oh yes, and come up with the money to pay both the accountant and the taxes. Which, coincidentally, is happening the same time the rent and storage rent are due. This is the sound of my head repeatedly hitting my desk.

Thus, I will be an auctioning fool. Not only is there the immediate worry of the whole tax/rent/accountant trifecta, but there's the impending expiration of our apartment lease, and thus I need to get rid of stuff and make extra money. (Our freelance work has tragically dried up, not sure if it's us or if it's just the economy. We work fairly cheap, but apparently, there are those who will always work cheaper.) So, I'm going through years worth of accumulated *stuff*, collectibles, toys, anime gewgaws, books, manga, comics, etc. If I haven't looked at it in years or can't even remember how it got into the apartment (and there's a lot of that, apparently our house just teleports stuff into it somehow), it goes on the block. I apologize in advance for the constant auction link spam that will be on all my future posts. This stuff has got to find new homes, seriously.

We got our tax paperwork back from Pennsylvania, and wonder of wonders, it is clearly marked "Transient Tax ID" all over it. One bullet dodged, at least.

I'm worried about a few of friends of mine who are going through rough patches right now as well, even though there's nothing I can really do to help. I can just hope things get better for them.

In Warcraft news, Zugs returned to Shadow Labyrinth, which is now tops on my list of "Most Hated Instances Ever". (It managed to beat out Gnomeregan!) Even though I ended up with delightful Phat Lewts, it took hours and hours. I hate that place so much. I'll probably end up going back though to help [livejournal.com profile] atomicpanda get his Karazahn key.

This weekend was okay, watched some more Buffy, Angel, One-Piece and the end of Densha Otoko (I cried). [livejournal.com profile] matthigh brought over a cake and left most of it here, where it calls to us with its evil cakey voice. DG was supposed to come by with Free Time, but never materialized. I hope he's okay. Tonight, once I am done with work, [livejournal.com profile] theuberbob will be bringing over my Torchwood fix, so I am looking forward to that. I'm all tired and ache-y though, so I sincerely hope I am not coming down with something.

Auction Plugs!

This girl is awesome, because she is making Warcraft soaps!

I am such a nerd, because I would totally buy those.

I'm posting this here because I know I have a lot of friends who play The Sims 2 also. Apparently, the new expansion pack, Bon Voyage has SecuROM encoded in it to prevent piracy (which it has already totally failed to do, by the way, there are cracked copies all over the net). So, if you buy a legit copy of the game and install it on your computer, it installs the SecuROM files secretly in a hidden folder on your hard drive, and can possibly cause your CD/DVD drive/burner to stop working entirely.

More on this here in the Sims 2 community. And more about SecuROM itself can be found here. Apparently, Bioshock had it also, and it was found to install rootkits on people's computers (while doing absolutely nothing to prevent the game from being cracked or pirated).

I know a lot of people who play this game on computers they also depend on for work purposes (and thus, CD/DVD drives/burners are essential for backing things up or making discs to send out to clients/publishers), so this is a horrible issue.

I also find it to be invasive and just think it's wrong on principle. A company shouldn't be allowed to install hidden files on my computer that access the internet without my permission (SecuROM can bypass firewall protections), or install files that will make important pieces of my computer stop working entirely. It's extremely uncool. I am waiting to see what EA has to say about this, because from the talk in the communities I frequent, it seems a lot of people are planning to buy a copy of Bon Voyage, but actually install illegal downloaded copies (since the cracked versions naturally do not contain the SecuROM stuff). Seems like the only way to avoid potential problems.

In other video game news, I have been enjoying the Brewfest event in World of Warcraft. This coming from someone who doesn't drink at all! There was some trouble with people spamming macros and area-of-effect spells during the Dark Iron Dwarves events, meaning I got disconnected a few times and the game lagged out completely. But Blizzard simply took out that part of the event until they can hotfix it so the griefing jerks can't mess it up for everyone else. This is why we can't have nice things, sheesh. I already got my pet Wolpertinger on Zugs (my main), and it's easily one of the cutest pets in the game. I'm now trying to get enough tickets to get a St. Pauli girl style dress and a ram mount. It's fun. More fun now that I don't have to constantly report people for spamming, anyway.
