What Girls/Women Buy Week 5

Here is the list of titles that I observed being purchased by girls/women for their own enjoyment at the comic store I work at for last week. As always, stuff women were purchasing for boyfriends/sons/husbands is not included.

A very light week this week, but from what I am told, the last two weeks of October are traditionally the slowest sales weeks of the year.

Sad Who News....

If you haven't heard it already, it's on Outpost Gallifrey now:

David Tennant to leave Doctor Who after 2009.

I am very sad about this! Not since Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor have I loved a Doctor so very much. I really liked Chris Eccleston as Nine, and was worried and upset when he changed to Tennant, but then Tennant totally won me over. Also, he's probably the cutest the Doctor has ever been- I have no explanation for my crazy ten-year-old crush on Tom "I look like Rasputin crossed with a crazy man!" Baker.

So, now I get to wait and wonder who the new Doctor will be. It's too much to hope that Steven Moffat will bring in Joanna Lumley, like in "The Curse of Fatal Death". (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4)

Lots of DVDs this week, as well as standard comics instead of manga. I'm still finding this gathering of information interesting, as I am only proving my theory that there is no "magic bullet" as to what women/girls will like in nerd media, they are all over the map, taste-wise. ^_^

A big manga week this week, and most of them yaoi titles. Which is completely unsurprising. ^_^

What Girls/Women Buy Week 2 (10/6/08)

This was a short week for me, since I was only on the schedule for four instead of my usual five days (what with the getting courthouse-married and all...) Still, here is the list of titles that I observed being purchased by girls/women for their own enjoyment at the comic store I work at. This week's list is smaller, as we had fewer female customers on the shifts I worked. Since it's so small this week, it's not in a cut.

Comics/graphic novels:
Stephen King's Dark Tower: Treachery

Manga/manhwa:
Goth
Black Jack
Disgaea 2
Full Metal Panic
Rosario+Vampire

Misc:
RPG dice

We also had a pair of girls come in to get a birthday present for one of their boyfriends- they bought a Wanted graphic novel and some Magic: The Gathering cards. But since they weren't buying these things for themselves, I didn't include them in this week's listing.

What Girls/Women Buy Week 1 (9/29/08)

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I am doing rather lackadaisical low key "research" into what women and girls buy for themselves in the comic/gaming/anime store I work at for my day job. ("Research" because it consists of me paying attention to sales and writing the stuff down in a little book.) I decided to do this because there seems to be so much talk online about "comics for girls" and "what girls want to read" and all that, and no one seemed to actually be looking at what girls/women buy in comics stores. So, it got me wondering. Also, my personal experiences of liking things only boys are supposed to like (comics, video games, using random quotes from movies out of context, etc.) made me wonder if there was any way you could accurately pin down "what all women want" when it comes to media or entertainment. So, this list was born. (And no, I don't think there is one easy answer for "what all women want", because women, like men, are individuals with their own personal tastes. The sooner people realize that, the better.)

I am only counting things that I see being bought on my actual shifts when I am working and I am only counting things that girls and women are buying for their own personal enjoyment/use. (Not counting stuff they get for boyfriends, husbands, sons, etc.) Sound fair? Okay, here's the list of titles for this week in the cut:

Don't Blink!

Tonight, I went with [livejournal.com profile] theuberbob to an event at the Alamo Drafthouse sponsored by the local Doctor Who fan club. They did a showing of "Girl in the Fireplace" and "Blink", and we went to represent the store and to sell DW toys from our vast inventory of same. We sold a bunch of toys, got to see the two episodes on the big screen, then sold a bunch more toys and went home. I was very pleased that someone was very excited to buy the Donna Noble toy. We also sold quite a few Tens, some Daleks, both sonic screwdrivers we brought and the Weeping Angel figures. All in all, I think it went well, and it was fun to see the two cute girls who cosplayed as Rose and Donna. (There was also a guy dressed as Ten and one dressed as Three, with the TARDIS key around his neck and everything.) No pictures from me, unfortunately, but Bob had his camera so maybe he will post them at some point.

In other things, here is what I do: WORK. If I am not working at the store, I am working on keeping abreast on Radio stuff, and if I am not doing that, I am usually eating (during which I poke at a video game or watch something) or sleeping. It makes me a dull girl. We are working on Furrlough #186 at present (which reminds me that I need to poke people about that) as well as a couple other upcoming books, since we're trying to get ahead. I also need to update the online store again soon.

I got into the WoW Beta, but have barely touched it. I tried out the barber shop and was disappointed in the lack of hairstyle diversity, tested the vanity pets features, looked at some Tuskarr and made a gnome Death Knight named Teenytoes. [livejournal.com profile] willworks has actually played her more than I have, since I would log in to try it out, then get tired and go to sleep (while still logged in on my computer...). Apparently, it's very fun, though I don't know if I like all the rampant civilian killing and general evil-ness. I mean, I play Horde mostly, but that doesn't mean I like killing innocent critters and townspeople. Ugh. Running the gauntlet to profess your loyalty to the king in the capitol city when you get to the end of the Death Knight quests is pretty hilarious though- the townspeople scream, insult you, spit at you, and pelt you with rotting fruit and garbage. That cracked me up.

Finished reading The Forest House by Marion Zimmer Bradley recently; also finished reading Kushiel's Justice by Jacqueline Carey recently. Comics-wise, I recently read NaNa Vol. 12, the new Love & Rockets, some random volumes of Genshiken and my Moomin comics. Oh, and I am working my way through the three issues of Yen Plus magazine. (I usually read during my lunch break at work...) So far, my favorites in that are Soul Eater (of course), Pig Bride and some sketchy little Korean comic in there about a dog, a cat and a mouse who live together. (I forgot what it was called, but it is really adorable.) [livejournal.com profile] densetsujin brought over The Girl Who Leapt Through Time the other day, and it was really very good. Recommended if you like Ghibli. Also, Xam'd: Lost Memories continues to be amazingly good. I also updated my Sims2 journal.

That's about it. Aside from the reading and occasional show-watching/game-playing, my life is now pretty much all work, all the time.

Link for James: Monkey!!!!

Thanks to the ever-fabulous [livejournal.com profile] anw for the link.

Jamie Hewlett Monkey King animation for BBC Sports 2008 Olympic coverage!

It's so cool!

"Born from an egg on a mountaintop! The funkiest monkey that ever popped!"

(That would be the song "Monkey Magic" by GoDiego, from the 1970's Japanese version of Saiyuki.... in case you're wondering!)

Hewlett's version is pretty rad!

Who: The Stolen Earth

My reaction?

ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!11!!!!

I'm not going to post spoilers here, and don't want others to do so either. (So don't! It's rude!) But holy crap, my head is exploding.

Waiting a week for the next one will be torture. TORTURE!

Big ups to [livejournal.com profile] theuberbob who took time from his own hellish apartment move to bring over our Who fix.
