Texas Survey

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] ichbinkeinenazi.

1. First of all, where in Texas do (did) you live?
San Antonio

2. Whats your favorite place to chill in Texas?
Austin, for sure.

3. Have you ever been on a boat in Lake Travis?
Uh, no.

4. Do you go camping?
Good lord, no.

5. Do you ever use the word "yall"?
Constantly.

6. Have you ever owned a truck?
Never. No one in my family did either. We had Volkswagens.

7. Have you ever had heat exhaustion?
Frequently! I fall right over.

8. How many Texas snows have you witnessed?
Four? Maybe? It happens so rarely, I can't remember it.

9. Have you ever ice skated indoors?
My ice skating days were over once I left Minnesota for good.

10. Have you ever squirted one of your parents with a water gun?
Possibly. My siblings and I used water guns on each other much more.

11. Do you prefer the Spurs or the Mavs?
Neither, really. I am completely uninterested in sports.

12. Do you like the city or the country?
I am a city girl. I hate the country, there are too many bugs, snakes and scorpions. Texas is a state that actively tries to kill people, don't ya know.

13. Have you ever been sprayed by a skunk?
No, never.

14. Have you ever run over an armadillo?
I've seen many, many dead ones by the side of the road. I don't think I've ever seen a living one in the wild.

15. Have you ever been to a Cowboys game?
No way.

16. Have you ever been to a Stars or an Icebats game?
Again, no way.

17. Have you ever attended the State Fair of Texas?
Nope. The last State Fair I went to was the Minnesota State Fair, which would have been when I was about 12.

18. What's your favorite Mexican food restaurant?
I love Ruthie's and Las Palapas. The tortilla soup at Las Palapas is my favorite of all. I used to love Sombrero Rosa, but then it got bought out by Taco Cabana and Taco Cabana kinda sucks now. Mr. Taco used to be okay, and Malthouse can be good, if you go on the right night.

19. Have you ever had Shiner beer?
No, only because I can't drink alcohol. But it was a favorite in my family.

20. Have you ever been on a hayride?
Uh, no.

21. Have you ever ridden a horse?
Once or twice maybe, I'm not into horses. They like to step on me.

22. Were you in 4-H or FFA?
No, not country enough for that.

23. Which place in Texas has the best scenery/view?
I don't know, really. My favorite thing to look at is the big giant sky here, so I don't really notice the scenery.

24. Which grocery store do you shop at?
HEB, duh. When I'm feeling hoity-toity, HEB Central Market.

25. Have you ever partied in a barn?
No.

26. Have you ever partied in a pasture?
God, no.

27. Do you like keg beer?
See question #19.

28. Are you Baptist?
Hell no.

29. Have you ever been swimming in a river or creek?
I have, but not in years and years. And also, it's scary because of the snakes.

30. How many presidents do you know lived in Texas?
I only really count LBJ. The others are interlopers, aren't they?

31. Have you ever been on the Comal River?
I don't think so.

32. Is your school big?
All the high schools I attended in Texas were big. 30-40 kids per classroom, usually.

33. How many times have you been to Houston?
Gosh, I forget. We used to go a lot, since it was the only place to buy anime stuff back in the day. But I am not fond of Houston.

34. Who is your favorite Texas music artist?
It's a toss-up between Charlie Sexton and Girl in a Coma.

35. Have you ever ridden a mechanical bull?
No, I am not a kicker.

36. Have you ever been to the rodeo?
I don't think I have ever attended a rodeo in all the time I have lived here.

37. Do you own a cowboy hat?
No way.

38. Finally, what's your favorite thing about Texas?
The wide open spaces and the big giant sky. I've gotten so used to that feeling of spaciousness that I feel clautrophobic in other states. The sky is too low, or the buildings are too close together, or it's too crowded. I also live for the barbecue brisket and the Tex-Mex food. Whenever we come back from a convention trip, we always go to Bill Miller's and to Las Palapas to re-acclimate ourselves.

Interesting about the sense of "big sky". In my time in Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida, I found the sky to be almost claustrophobic, due to the flat land and true horizon being hidden by local terrain. The effect was to remove any sense of scale to the sky. Living in western Washington State, the mountain ranges provided landmarks for size and distance, so you could definitively tell if the dramatic poof of cloud was a local event 3 miles away or the harvenger of a massive front 100 miles or more away.
