Preparing for the next SAAS anime meeting, I present you with the semi-complete history of Super Robot Anime, represented by opening credits! As usual, organized by date of release, and in the cut due to the length of the post.
Tetsujin-28, 1963 aka Gigantor
Mazinger Z, 1972
Astrogangar, 1972
Babel Nisei, 1973
Getter Robo, 1974
Great Mazinger, 1974
Kotetsu Jeeg, 1975
Yuusha Reideen, 1975 This is the anime opening that spawned our local inside joke about the Reideen Kids' Chorus; any time there is a group of kids singing in an anime or tokusatsu opening, it's the Reideen Kids' Chorus. They never age, and are always the same kids. XD
UFO Robo Grendizer, 1975
Daiku Maryu Gaiking, 1976
Gowapper 5 Godam, 1976 Goddamn! XD I love that the girl is the leader of this team. Also, her hat is rad.
Choudenji Robo Combattler V, 1976
Groizer X, 1976
Blocker Gundan IV Machine Blaster, 1976 Features a return of the Reideen Kids' Chorus
Magne Robo Gakeen, 1976 Totally badass disco guitar in the bridge on this one; also the robot wears other, smaller robots as armguards. XD
UFO Warrior Dai Apolon, 1976
Wakusei Robo Danguard Ace, 1977 Created by Leiji Matsumoto, if it wasn't obvious by the chara design for the heroine!
Gasshin Sentai Mechander Robo, 1977 The Reideen Kids' Chorus reappears! Yay!
Choudenji Machine Voltes V, 1977 How rad is that villain design? Super rad! And WOW, FRINGED VESTS!
Chogattai Majutsu Robo Ginguizer, 1977 I could only find the Italian opening for this series... obscure anime series is obscure!
Chojin Sentai Balatack, 1977
Muteki Chojin Zanbot 3, 1977 Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino!
Tosho Daimos, 1978 I'm a fan of this one, since
jameshanrahan showed it to us- even terribly dubbed in English in the Philippines, it's a great, over the top show! Drama cranked up to 11 from the very first episode!
Muteki Koujin Daitarn 3, 1978
Uchuu Majin Daikengo, 1978
Mirai Robo Daltanias, 1979
Tōshi Gordian, 1979 The concept of giant-robot-as-Russian-nesting-dolls is unique, I think! Also, how awesome is this dude? He just steps on the enemies and smushes them. Totally nonchalant!
Muteki Robo Trider G7, 1980 This may be the first where the pilots are a group of elementary students, likely in homage to the pilots of Tetsujin-28 and Astrogangar.
Uchuu Taitei God Sigma, 1980
Space Runaway Ideon, 1980 Another Tomino series, so I assume everyone has to die by the end. Apparently, in the Super Robot Taisen game, the Ideon can be invoked and then that pilot's stats go to 999, though the robot becomes uncontrollable. Ha!
Space Warrior Baldios, 1980
New Tetsujin 28, 1980 This is a five minute fight scene; could not find the actual 1980's opening on YouTube.
Saikyo Robo Daiohja, 1981 Awesome cape action! Epaulets! Also, infamous in FAST and SAAS circles for the themesong chorus, otherwise known as the "Free Buffet song".
Golden Warrior Gold Lightan, 1981 Yes, the robot is a cigarette lighter. All I can think is that there was a hellish deadline around the Tatsunoko offices in the planning stages of this show!
Hundred Beast King Golion, 1981 Part of what became Voltron in the states. Also, you will now have "One... plus one... plus one..." in your head for the rest of the day. You're welcome!
Sengoku Majin Goushougun, 1981 This was one of the shows used to make the US show Macron-1.
Six God Combination Godmars, 1981 I love this themesong so much. It rocks!
Ginga Senpuu Braiger, 1981 This one looks awesome! I've never seen it before today. Now I want more, alas!
Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV, 1982 Also part of Voltron.
Makyo Densetsu Acrobunch, 1982 Such kickass style on all the heroes in this one! Why is there no cosplay for this?!
Ginga Reppuu Baxinger, 1982, Again with the AWESOME hero costumes! Those capes! And everyone can fence! Awesome! And you can't tell me there weren't multiple doujinshi about all those dudes back in the day, they're totally cool.
Aku Dai-Sakusen Srungle, 1983 How do your pronounce Srungle? I don't even know what they were going for there. Also used for the Macron-1 TV show in the US.
Kosoku Denjin Albegas, 1983
Ginga Shippu Sasuraiger, 1983
Psycho Armor Govarian, 1983
Chou Kousoku Galvion, 1984
Video Warrior Laserion, 1984
Giant Gorg, 1984 By Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, the man who brought us Venus Wars
God Mazinger, 1984 Ending credits; could only find parodies of the opening!
Choriki Robot Galatt, 1984
Panzer World Galient, 1984
Star Musketeer Bismark, 1984 Known as Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs here in the US. Classic MIO song on this one.
Chojuu Kishin Dancougar, 1985
Ninja Senshi Tobikage, 1985
Iczer-One, 1985 A trailer, could not find an opening online, I guess because it's an OVA.
Machine Robo: Revenge of Chronos, 1986
ARIEL, 1986 There is no evidence of this on YouTube, after multiple searches. Lost to time!
Machine Robo: Battle Hackers, 1987 Opening by Masami Oobari, king of opening credits! The semi-rap song is pretty terrible though.
Dangaioh, 1987 Cross fight, cross fight! One of the first anime I ever owned translated, from US Manga Corps if I remember right, $80 for a video tape with a 30-45 minute episode on it. Yowza. I never want to hear younger anime fans complain about paying $50 for an *entire series* on DVD again. ^_~
Makyo Gaiden Le Deus, 1987 Arguably, the most intensely dull opening credits sequence ever.
Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster, 1988 One of my other first-ever-owned anime series; still have the tapes and still love Coach. The second appearance ever of the classic Gainax bounce, as well. (First being in the Daicon 4 animation.)
Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru, 1988 I still have like nine million stickers for this show culled from old issues of Animage and Animedia.
Hades Project Zeorymer, 1988 Could not find anything for this but episodes cut into chunks, and the chatty intro subbed into Italian. Huh.
Jushin Liger, 1989 He is a juicy liger, it's true.
Mado King Granzort, 1989 I also have nine billion stickers for this series, despite never having seen it.
NG Knight Lamune & 40, 1990
Mashin Eiyuden Wataru 2, 1990

Iczer-3, 1990
Getter Robo Go, 1991
Zettai Muteki Raijin-Oh, 1991 I love this one, kids with robots and they have a pet goat? How awesome is that? Plus, a great inspiring song, it feels very heroic.
Tetsujin 28 FX, 1992
Genki Bakuhatsu Ganbaruger, 1992 Love this one too, great opening and goofy fun.
Giant Robo: The Animation, 1992
K.O. Beast, 1992 Rock'n'Roll Bomber!
Nekketsu Saikyo Gosaurer, 1993
Shooting Star Gakusaver, 1993
Kishin Corps: Alien Defender Geo-Armor, 1993
Red Baron, 1994
Mobile Fighter G Gundam, 1994 Shining finger! This counts as a Super Robot show, as opposed to other Gundam shows which count as Real Robot shows due to the more realistic, dramatic nature of the science fiction in those. G-Gundam has the requisite goofiness for a Super Robot show.
Lord of Lords Ryu Knight, 1994
Magic Knight Rayearth, 1994
Yamato Takeru, 1994
Neon Genesis Evangelion, 1996
Knights of Ramune & 40 Fire, 1996 I apologize in advance for getting this song stuck in anyone's head. It's hella catchy! Whenever we watched this back in old days at SAAS, everyone would start dancing in their seats. So cheerful!

Getter Robo Armageddon, 1998
Cybuster, 1999

Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z Hen, 2009

Omake Extras:
Mighty Orbots, 1984 Made for the US market. James once made an AMV of this opening with the Godmars themesong, and it fit together frighteningly well.
Gekiganger III, 1998 The parody Super Robot show from Martian Successor Nadesico, you know your parody is successful when it has its own OVA!
Megas-XLR, 2004
I've purposely left out the Brave series of shows, since those are going to be their own separate themed meeting at a later date. Also, my listings for Super Robot anime in the 2007-2010 era may be a little spotty- I have not paid too much attention to things in "The Moe Years". XD
