I found this link on The Beat, and had to share it:

The Top 40 Worst Pieces of Rob Liefeld Art

I laughed and laughed, and was amazed afresh at the absolute hideousness of this man's "art" and his lack of anatomy or perspective. It reminded me of the old days in the very early 1990's when I managed a comic shop and had to deal with the Rob-fans that used to come in. It was very difficult to keep a straight face when selling them their comics sometimes.

Flash forward a few years to when I worked at Antarctic Press. Warrior Nun Areala was really taking off, so Ben Dunn, one of my bosses, was doing all manner of promotional art pieces in a big hurry to capitalize on the rush of popularity. Some of these pieces were done just for in-house ads and some were actually used in ads in Previews. One day, we got a call from some of Rob Liefeld's staff, who were threatening lawsuits. (I think at Awesome Comics, since by this time, that was what was going on.) Naturally, everyone in the office pretended to go about their business while suddenly finding pretexts to work very near the open door to Ben's office. (Of course, we were all eavesdropping! Everyone wanted to know what was going on!) Ben finished the phone call, and came out to announce what had happened. It seemed Rob was very peeved over the latest issue of Previews, which had an ad with Areala wearing a certain style of body armor and holding a certain style of shield. These guys had called Ben to yell at him for swiping Rob's art--- but Ben had the last laugh. Ben asked the guy on the phone if he was in Rob's office. The guy said he was. Ben asked him to look around Rob's drawing desk for a specific book. That book?

Akitaka Mika's Gundam Girls art book.

Sure enough, the book was there. Ben asked the guy to check a certain page. Ben then explained that he'd gotten his idea for Areala's outfit out of that book, and obviously, so had Rob. The guy apologized, and busted out laughing with the declaration that they were going to give Rob a ton of ribbing about the situation. Ben came out and told us the story, at which point we all died laughing, then promptly went out to lunch.

Ah, comic books. They do make for the fun memories sometimes.

I have a sinus migraine of epic proportions today. The cold front must have made a pressure system explode right over my head or something. Off to work and deal with errands anyway.

And hey, tomorrow is Cheap Chocolate Day, the holiday invented by [livejournal.com profile] atomicpanda. Woot!
