If you have VH-1 Classic, and are interested in music history or just like really old videos, all day today on that channel they are duplicating the video play list of the first day of MTV from August 1, 1981.
It's really cool so far, there are a lot of incredibly crappy bands I've never heard of in my life, and a lot of horrible "smooth rock" performance videos. It makes the gems like Blondie, the Buggles, the Cars and the Pretenders totally stand out. I swear, the Blondie video for "Rapture" looked like it was light years ahead in time compared to the terrible mullet-headed soft rock adult contemporary crapola, and that is not at all what I would consider a "good" video. Blondie's status as a weird, underground punk band suddenly makes so much more sense when viewed in the context of the rest of the music of the time.
I am only pissed because I have to do a ton of start-of-the-month bill-paying errands today before I go to work, so I am going to miss a lot of the programming. But yay, they will be repeating it on August 5th...
