They are aliens. The Protoss from Starcraft, I believe. Also, they are related to the Eredar and the Lost Ones. There's a bunch of lore about it out there somewhere. atomicpanda knows way more than me.
I think the deal is that Warcraft and Starcraft are related the same way Warhammer and Warhammer 40k are related. ^_^ But oh, no, Warcraft isn't a computer version of Warhammer, no sirree. ^_~
