I love YouTube so very much. Why?

Because you can see things like the Daicon Animation. A better copy than I have on video even.

This was made in 1983. It is a huge piece of anime history for many reasons. Firstly, it was one of the first things made by the group of fans that would become Gainax. Secondly, it featured the first ever "Gainax Bounce". Thirdly, every speck of it was animated BY HAND, BY NERDS. Fourthly, it features the first ever appearance of the "Anime Bunny Girl" archetype. Fifthly (is that even a word?), [livejournal.com profile] divalea, [livejournal.com profile] parasitegirl, [livejournal.com profile] kyryn and I all wore costumes based on that very bunny girl when we were all young and starting out in anime fandom. (This was a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...) The character Misty May in Otaku no Video is also based on that bunny girl. There are still references to the Daicon bunny girl to this day in anime and TV shows in Japan, and I am pretty sure you can still get garage kits of her. The Daicon bunny girl is like a symbol of fandom and many people have a very strong affection for her. It is the reason every anime fan in America over a certain age owns a copy of the Time album by Electric Light Orchestra on CD.

Most recently, the Japanese drama, Densha Otoko had an opening credits sequence that referenced the Daicon animation, and even used the same piece of music.

Here's a side by side comparison!

Geek history: my secret passion. Next time, I'll talk about the impact the Time Bokan series had on anime villainesses in subsequent anime releases. ^_~

Back to work for me, the allergy meds have finally kicked in, so I can shovel comic boxes around without dripping snot on them now.

EDIT: Holy crap! There was a sequel for the Daicon 3 animation (the one that came before the classic "bunny girl" one, it featured a little girl pouring a glass of water on a daicon radish that became a spaceship)! This one features her transforming into dozens of classic character costumes! Watch for Harlock, Wonder Woman, Superman, Ultra 7, and Char Anzable! So cute! And I never knew it existed until today, though I had seen resin kits for the character in many of these costumes!
