In Japan anyway, where they have already developed Hatsune Miku, a synthesized idol. Using Vocoloid 2 software from Yamaha, she can sing any song you choose. Near as I can figure out, she must be the perfect idol singer- she'll never age, never grow up, never cause any scandals, and she has the cutesy vocal stylings so popular in Japan. Her adorable mascot character design probably isn't hurting her any either! Yamaha will be releasing two more "virtual idols" using this software.

Considering how popular video game characters have been in both Japan and America (since you can basically attach any personality or quirks you want to, as they are essentially cyphers), I suspect the personality-free Hatsune-san will be incredibly popular. There's already an all-Hatsune-Miku doujin event in Japan.

Videos of our future computer pop star overlord under the cut.

"01_Ballade" (her original promo video)

"Sukiyaki" (aka "Ueomuite Arukou", if you're [livejournal.com profile] jameshanrahan XD)

"Doraemon no Uta" (NSFW occasionally, due to image choices, some 4chan-like elements)

"Ievan Polka", because it's hilarious:

So, so weird. Yet so fascinating!

In other things, work continues, lots of it. Also, money is tight right now due to checks not coming in when they are supposed to, so once again I will flog my auctions.

The first one kinda creeped me out but the last one was more awesome than I've seen in weeks.

You know, I'd made the same observation about inexplicably popular characters (and people) in the fandom... they lack any personality at all, and people just read whatever they want into them. Thank you for the confirmation. :)

1) Sharon Apple is real... and looks like a reject from Megatokyo.

2) Words can't express how badly I want to see someone use the software and make her sing "Straight Outta Compton".

Damn clickers! Just you wait! They're going to try to take over the world.

Oh yeah, I thought of that right away! Also a crappy sci-fi book called Little Heroes by Norman Spinrad. Idoru was way better.

It's not even that expensive on Amazon JP, but they won't ship it out of the country. Suckage!

They're apparently working on an English version, which is probably why they won't ship it out of the country yet. Japan is weird about not selling video games/software to people in other countries, something to do with licensing agreements.

Amazon JP is selling it for a shade under 16,000 yen. Currency converters tell me that's about $150.
