I started with a single phone line that we've had for 30 years (same number, bare basic phone service). We had dial up internet for a while, but a few years ago I ordered DSL from Earthlink. They mailed me the modem and some filters and instructions, and I set it up myself. I got some help via their Indian support staff.
But I go into things *assuming* I'm not going to get much help, so I'm used to doing the brunt of the labor for whatever it is myself or with the aid of a friend. I actually prefer things I have a chance of doing myself so I don't have to depend on someone who is never going to come.
I've never dealt with the phone company more than absolutely necessary. I keep hearing Bad Things about their DSL service (the modem they give you is crap, AND they're rude to you or ignore you), so I never bothered to switch from Earthlink, which I only ever got anyway because it was $12/mo for the first year. Now it's $30, which is kind of high.
We have Direct TV, but satellite internet is way too expensive. We don't have cable installed at all (i.e. it's never been installed in this house).
